Soreness in back
Unfortunately while shoveling snow, I seem to have aggravated an ongoing lower back issue that pops up every couple of years. I am going to give it one more day and I think it will be fine. Planning to do a two hour elliptical training session tomorrow and hopefully it won't give me any troubles.

Happy New Year
With only a few days remaining in 2007, I want to wish all of my friends a wonderful and safe new year. To say that this has been an interesting year would be an understatement. There are so many reasons to look forward to 2008 and I hope to share them with you in the upcoming months.
As for my first big event of 2008, the P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Marathon on Phoenix in just a few weeks, I am happy to say that I have reached my minimum fundraising goal of $3250 and am quickly closing in on $4000. My original goal was $5000 and after the new year, I will go to work to reach that goal as well. The training is coming along great and I guess you could say that I am there and ready with two weeks to go. I did a 16.5 mile run last weekend, which was my last big run before the marathon. Sometme this weekend, I do plan to get back on the eliptical trainer for one more long workout and then just relax until marathon day with a few easy runs.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. No words can explain the appreciation that I have for everyone who has contributed, encouraged and wished me well. This truely has been an incredible experience for me.

Marathon Eliptical Training Session II
The weather in Topeka isn't any better, plus I am trying to get to church and a Christmas lunch . So, I am doing the eliptical trainer thing again today. I don't know how long I will be on this thing, but I have food and water to last several hours. I am also rapidly closing in on my fundraising goal. Thanks to everyone who has helped in this campaign.

Weekly Update
Whose idea was it to train for a winter marathon in Kansas? The same person who decided five years ago to train for a mountain bicycle ride in Kansas? Nothing like those steep climbs up to the overpasses over the interstate.
The only thing I can say after the ice that fell in Topeka last weekend is thank goodness for the elliptical trainer my wife decided to buy a few years back. Because that is where I have spent the past week or so, indoors in my basement, with my legs spinning round and round, for hours and hours and hours.
It’s not exactly how I had planned to spend the final few weeks of my training, but I think it is working for me. On Sunday morning, I spent more than three hours, covering what I would equate to about twenty miles minus the pounding that running puts on your legs, knees and hips. So far this week, I have put in about thirty miles and I am planning for a twenty miler on Saturday to put me over the fifty mile mark for the week. I am a firm believer in running time over distance and there is great benefit to being able to keep your legs moving for four hours plus. You’ll know if my strategy worked when I make my final report on the marathon. The elliptical trainer mimics the leg and hip motion of running without the pounding and it greatly reduces the risk of injury.
With two weeks to go to my minimum fundraising deadline, I am happy to report that I am just $644 short of my minimum fundraising goal of $3250. But I don’t intend to stop at the minimum. Each dollar raised brings us that much closer to finding a cure for blood cancers. I intend to do my part, both running and fundraising, for that cure.
Thank you to those of you who have contributed. I hope I have earned the gracious support you have shown to this effort. Many of you have written back and said that you plan to support me. We all need a friendly reminder from time to time, I’m no different. So think of this as just that, a friendly reminder. There are also some of you who I know won’t contribute and that is okay. Part of my goal is to also raise awareness for blood cancers.

Or, if you just want to send along your words of encouragement, I am accepting those as well. For those of you who have run marathons in the past, you know what happens somewhere about twenty two miles. For those who don’t know what I am talking about, just think pain - excruciating pain.
With the end of the year quickly approaching, I want to wish all of you a wonderful Holiday Season, a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I am looking forward to breaking in 2008 with the accomplishment of the goal of completing my second marathon.
Thank you for your support and encouragement. Remember, you can always track my training efforts at http://greghilltnt.blogspot.com.

Three hours on the eliptical trainer
Because of the Topeka weather, I am forced inside for a three hour workout on the eliptical trainer. I am finishing up my workout while I write this. I would compare this to about twenty miles, but without the pounding. Hopefully, I'll feel a little better after this than I would out on the streets.

Podcast Update
About three months ago, I decided to approach my fundraising by being creative in how I reach out to my friends and family in my effort to raise money for a cure for blood cancer.
These last twelve weeks have been both fun and challenging. But I am in great shape, I have raised more than $2000 for cancer research and I have learned a great deal about podcasting and using the internet in a fun and exciting way.
I hope you have enjoyed my podcasts. I have done nine of them. They have been fun to make and I have, I think, done a much better job of sharing my passion for this cause than I might have done otherwise.
It takes about one hour to make one minute of video. And that doesn’t count the wait time for uploading, processing, downloading and writing. I have probably devoted two full work weeks in the early mornings before my family awoke, over my lunch hours and the late evenings putting these together. With all that is left to do, the training, fundraising and thanking of my supporters along with the rapidly approaching holidays, I have decided to cancel my podcast series. I know a few of you have watched them each week, but when I looked at the time they took to make, it just wasn’t a good “business” decision for me to continue. I do plan to be back after the marathon for a wrap-up show.
Until then, thank you for watching, thank you for your kind words of support and thank you for the many contributions.

Dear Friend,
In just over a month, I will be lacing up my running shoes for PF Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon with nothing ahead of me but 26.2 miles of roads and the excitement of completing my second marathon for blood cancer research. For the past nearly 20 weeks, I have gone from having to work through a three mile jog through the neighborhood to completing an 18 mile run and still having the will and endurance to run more. It’s been an amazing and truly a fun transition for me personally and being back in “marathon shape” feels incredible.
My goal while training for this marathon has also been to spread the word about the importance of more cancer research and to raise money for that research through the Team in Training program. As part of my dedicationto finding a cure for cancer, I have committed myself to raising a minimum of $3250. To date, I have raised just short of $2000 and have just over $1250 yet to raise. My deadline for completing my fundraising is coming up quickly.
I first want to say a special thank you to everyone who has already contributed to my cause. Your donations and words of encouragement have motivated me through some difficult runs and I expect to refer to them on marathon day around mile twenty three.
With this letter, I am hoping to make the final push to $3250 so that I can complete my fundraising effort and devote the remainder of my time to training. If you have not already joined me in this effort and you still want to help by making a donation, you can click here or mail your contributions to either:

Training Update
I just got finished up a four mile run and it felt good. My cold is still bothering me a little, but I think I am about over it. Saturday, I did about 2 1/2 hours on the eliptical trainer so my calves are very tight. Within the next two or three days, I hope to get another podcast out along with another email letter to my friends and supporters.

Monday Update
I always belive in giving myself plenty of recovery time after a hard week. Since the 18 miler two Sunday's ago, I gave myself a week of recovery with a few easy runs to keep me honest. The opportunity to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and begin putting up decorations was definitely appreciated. Earlier tonight I put in an easy four miler and I ran it a little faster than I have been, so it is good to push the pace a little to help build some speed. The rest of the week looks like this. Four or Five miles tomorrow and/or Wednesday, an off day on Thursday (to watch the Packers and Cowboys on NFL now in HD) and then an easy cross country run on Saturday. On Sunday I plan to get in a good 16-20 miles. I wish the marathon was a few weeks closer because I risk sickness or injury. But I guess I should just be happy that I am getting marathon ready fairly quickly. Thankfully though, I am not worried about time.

Weekend Run Update
As you may know, I had high hopes of running the Gobbler Grind Half Marathon on Sunday in Overland Park. Unfortunately, I didn't register online in time to meet the deadline and the only way for me register was to drive to Overland Park, register on-site for $45 and then drive back home, only to go back again the next day.
Instead, I chose to head out on a long run. Eighteen miles to be exact. Other than the run with my brother as part of his ultra-marathon, I hadn't been over 13 on my own. I crossed the 13.1 mile mark at 2:21 which was well within my goal of 2:30. The good thing was that I was getting progressively faster as I went along. Definitely my best run of this training cycle and one of my best runs I ever had.
With that, I ran 42 miles for the week.

Gobbler Grind
I am running my first half-marathon this weekend in over four years. I will be running the Gobbler Grind in Overland Park. A half marathon is my favorite race distance - its far enough to amaze my family and friends, but not so far that you are physically exhausted. I will be running with my brother Scott and his wife Jennifer. I'll report my finish time on Sunday.

Dear Friends:
Sometimes it is hard to explain why we do the things that we do. This morning, I will be attending the funeral of my high school classmate Yona Julian who passed away last Saturday following a battle with cancer which began in June of 2006.
Yona was the inspiration for me to participate in the Team in Training program and the reason why I have committed myself to raise money and to devote my personal time and energy toward this cause. There are few people who walk this earth that will be remembered for such a dedicated life. I remember reading something she wrote last year how she had always lived a very healthy lifestyle and that it didn’t make sense. Yona was a thirty-six year old mother of four children, had been a stellar athlete in high school and college and a friend to the community in which she lived.
Cancer doesn’t make sense. It can strike anyone at anytime. Great advances are being made, but when we lose the life of someone we know, it reminds us that we have a long way to go.
My effort to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma is beginning to wind down. In just over a month, I will begin to wrap up my fundraising for this effort. Thank you so much to those of you have already contributed. Many others have pledged their support. If you have thought about supporting my effort, take a moment on this day, the day in which Yona’s friends and family will remember her life, and visit my website and make a donation. Donations can also be sent to either:

I thank you for taking a moment of your busy day. I realize that this effort might not be for you. If you wish to be removed from future updates, please let me know. It’s always a fine line between sharing something you truly believe in and doing too much that turns people off.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

TNT Podcast #8
The eighth episode of my Team in Training Podcast has been uploaded. This week's episode focuses on the loss of my honored patient and the different ways in which I am using the internet for this project. Unfortunatly, I am not at all pleased with the quality of this podcast. After the success last week with the green screen, I couldn't get it to work this week at all. I think it was because of the black and white checkered shirt I wore. Maybe my new WIBW friends from Twitter can help me out on that one. But because of my schedule this week, the added miles I have been putting in, I just wanted to get this out the door.

In Memory

Yona Julian (1971-2007)
If you have been following my podcasts, you know the reason I running this marathon is because of a high school classmate and longtime friend of mine, Yona Julian who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in June 0f 2006. Yona passed away this past weekend. My heart goes out to Brett, her husband, and four children. From now until the marathon in January, with every training run, I will run one extra mile in your her honor.
Daily Training Update
Yesterday, I took the day off from work to help my wife paint our dining room. That meant I had to get my long run in before we got started. So at 5:00 a.m. I hit the road with my orange vest and reflective gloves. I got a good twelve miles in yesterday, which included a bit of cross country in a park near my house. This weekend, I am planning to run the Gobbler Grind Half Marathon in Overland Park. I am sure hope they will keep the clock going until I finish and don't run out of medals.

Quick Update
A many thanks to all of you who have sent your inspirational best wishes and encouragement. I appreciate all of them. I told one supporter that I would have to print out all of the emails and carry them with me because I might need them at mile 22. I really might consider that. I have also received many generous contributions in the past few days and I thank you sincerely.
Today, I am off to the airport for a quick business trip to Las Vegas. I threw in my camera and laptop and if time, I might just shoot next weeks podcast while I am there. If so, I'll try and get it posted so I can officially say I have done a "remote".
I also got in a six miler this morning before I left. Felt great. And I averaged under ten minute miles. For you runners out there, I know that is slow. But I will take what I can get. I am not necessarily out for speed on this marathon, just covering the distance.
I'll try and catch up with you again before the end of the weekend and hopefully I will get that podcast done while I am out there. Thanks again everyone.

Podcast #7
Along with becomming a better runner and raising more money, I also try each week to improve my skills as a podcaster. Looking back to the first few weeks, there is a noticiable improvement. This episode looks and sounds much better and took far less time to produce. I don't necessarily plan to do more than one of these a week, but I am getting much better with the process.
For those of you wondering when to make a contribution. Anytime is fine. My deadline is December 28th, but earlier I finish the fundraising, the sooner I can begin to concentrate on my training. I hope you like this week's episode.

Weekly Update for November 4
A quick update on some of the things that are going on.
- I am working on this week's Team in Training Podcast and I plan to release it on Wednesday. I am looking forward to this week's episode and a few "special effects" I am working on.
- Today, I put in a hard 10 miler. My plan was for a longer run, but I revised my training plan a little using a program from Runner's World. I plan to include my training program in the weekly video.
- Many have asked when the fundraising deadline is. Technically I have until December 28th, but I am really going to start pushing for the $5000 goal now, so I am not sweating it out come the end of the year.
- I'll be adding many new viewers in the next week or so. To those of you who are here for the first time welcome. For those who have been following me through the past eight weeks or so, I hope you have enjoyed th blog and the videos.
I'll update again in the next few days with an update on the video and updates on my training goal.

Weekly Update
Like the Chiefs last Sunday, I took the weekend off. Friday afternoon, I put in an easy three miler, but with aches and paines. I don't know if it has been a low-grade flu or just fatigue, but I spent a good portion of the weekend trying to work out the "creaks" in my hips and knees. I ran again last night and seemed to be fine. My plan is to run long on Saturday and I'll be back on track.
It's also time to press the fundraising side of my efforts. I always hate asking for money. But that is what I am doing. But it is because of a cause that I believe in. This weekend, besides the long run, I will be sending out another fundraising email and mailing. I would ask for your support.
I'll be back next week with a video update again next week.

Podcast #6
I'll be honest. I didn't really know if anyone was actually watching these videos. But in the past few days, I have spoken to a number of people who have been watching and wondering when the next video was going to be produced. I am greatly touched to know that the effort to make and produce these vidoes is being noticed. While I am getting better at the process, several hours go into the development of each video podcast. It's hours I enjoy, but it does help to know that people are watching. So thank you. This week, I talk about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. My camera "crashed" this morning and I was not able to pull off the second half of the video. Thankfully, I received a disk in the mail today with photos from the Topeka Light the Night Walk.
As for the training, I put in a good ten miler on Sunday with a good friend of mine who is running the Marine Corp Marathon this weekend. We ran faster than I am used to (1:35:00 for ten miles or about 9:30 pace). I am shooting for 11:00 miles in the marathon. My plan still is to get out next weekend for 15-18 miles. I'll let you know how it goes.
I will be sending out a mailing in the next few days to ask for support. The bottom line is that I am raising money for this cause. The training and the marathon are secondary. It's all about the mission and the hope and desire that one day, my efforts and the efforts of thousands of others will pay off and a cure for cancer will be found. You can donate online by vising this link http://www.active.com/donate/tntks/tntksGHill.
I would also like to ask a favor. Whether or not you donate personally, we all have friends who have been touched personally by cancer or are close to someone who has. Please pass this link on to them. My goal is to begin to reach more and more people with this message so that we will move closer to a cure.
Here, a day early, is the newest video. Thank you again for your support and encouragement.

Update
Okay, I didn't realize that it had been a full week since my last update. But wow, what an incredible week it was. My brother completed the full 100-mile run and I tagged along for about twenty. I've got some photos and video I will put together hopefully tonight. I am still recovering, not so much from the run, but from staying up all night Saturday night. Definitely too old for that.

Podcast #4
My fourth podcast is online. My planned half marathon is in the books, the Chicago Marathon was a disaster and my brother is running an ultra-marathon. That's a lot of running, but after not running for so long, it feels great to be back in the sport. I ran into some problems uploading it to Blogger, so its only available over at YouTube. Check it out and I'll check back in later this week for another update.

Half Marathon Update
I set out yesterday morning with high hopes of running 13.1 miles. After what happened last week, I got out the door early before any bad weather had a chance to develop. My time was nothing to speak of, but I did cover the distance and while I am a little sore today, I am pleased with the fact I was able to make it through. I am working on this week's podcast and I should have it up on Wednesday as usual.

TNT Podcast #3
The third installment of my Team in Training Podcast is up. You will hopefully notice this is a much better production than the previous two. My goal is to raise $5000 to help fund research for a cure and to provide patient services for those currently suffering from one of these blood related cancers. I am shooting for $1000 by Oct. 9th, which is the next team meeting. Please visit my Team in Training donation page at http://www.active.com/donate/tntks/tntksGHill and consider making a contribution to this wonderful organization.

Sunday Long Run
Last night was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk. The event was very successful and it looks like we raised about $55,000. The event was well attended and I think everyone had a great time.
As for today's run, I finally called it quits after 10.8 miles. I was doing fine until I headed back into a very strong headwind. At times, it was even hard to walk. But, I am getting some miles in and I feel good about the training progress so far.
I have finished shooting this week's podcast. I think this one is going to be pretty good. I spent Friday night researching podcasting techniques, including lighting and how to work my camera. I want to include some video from last night's walk. Look for something around Wednesday.

Tuesday Run
I decided to break in the shoes rather than put in the ten miles I had considered earlier in the day. I still ran six and am planning a long run this weekend of at least ten.
A friend of mine told me that her brother was just diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia this morning. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family and I will keep them in my mind as I work through some of the exhausting runs that are ahead of me. I always gain inspiration from these stories and whenever I am struggling to finish a run, I remember the struggles I am feeling is nothing compared to the pain of cancer. This is why I am running ... to help find a cure.

Video Podcast #2
The second episode of the video podcast is online. You can also view it on You Tube. Sadly, as the day has gone by, I seem to have caught a cold so the eight miler has been postponed. Hopefully tomorrow. Enjoy the video.

Training Update
I ran five miles tonight. My time was 52:52 which is by all means, pretty slow. But I felt good working my way through it. Sunday I am going to run eight. A big thank you to the donors, those who have pledged support, and those who have offered encouraging words. I have also been asked, "why the video?" The reality is that if I can help raise one dollar more, that will help find a cure one minute earlier that will save the life of one person, I have done my job. Plus it gives me a good reason to play around with my video camera and computer and do something productive and fun. Episode two is undergoing some script editing and rehearsal. Look for it in the next few days. There are some technical issues driving the director crazy. Keep you posted.

Today's Three Miler ...
was only 2.66, but it was with an additional 40 lbs. If you are looking for a tough workout, I recommend a running stroller, a four year old and hills. Lots of them. I forgot the heart monitor, but I am certain my maximum heart rate was in the red for about 2.55 of that. A big thank you to the early donors - $200 already in the bank. I will attempt the five miler on Friday and the eight on Sunday. Hopefully I will have a chance to put together another video podcast. Next weekend it the annual Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Talk to you again soon.

The first of my video podcasts are up. If you are curiuos, the jets at the end of the video flew overhead during the filming of this video. I decided to go ahead and use the footage and tied it in with the closing of the video. The video is also on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcXFgR7int4.

Help Save Lives ... One Mile at a Time
Dear Friends:
Today I begin my training for the P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Marathon which will take place on January 13, 2008. I am running this marathon as a participant in the Team in Training program of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The training program will take me 16 weeks and to the marathon in Phoenix, AZ and I am very excited to get started. For those who don't know about the Team in Training program, it is one of the largest organized endurance training programs in the world. I am being coached with running and nutrition advise while I raise money for research and patient services for those fighting Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease and Myeloma. I participated in a marathon in 2001 and 100-mile cycling event 2002. I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Chapter. As you can see, this is a program that is very near and dear to my heart.
I will continue to update my training progress with this blog as well as a weekly Video Podcast. The first episode is just about ready and I hope to have it up on the web here very soon. In the meantime, please click here and consider making a contribution to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and support not only my efforts, but the fight to find a cure. My goal is $3850, but I hope to far exceed this amount. Click here to make an online donation.
Of course, if you wish to mail a check, you can mail them to:
Greg Hill
3460 SW Jardine Terr.
Topeka, KS 66611
Please continue to check back here and I will continue to update my training progress, hopefully daily and produce a weekly video Podcast where I hope to introduce you to fellow teammates and those fighting and those who have won the battle against cancer. I look forward to an amazing 16 weeks and I hope you will consider joining me in this effort.
For those who are interested, my training this week consists of an easy 3 mile run on Tuesday, a five mile tempo run on Thursday and aneight mile run on Sunday. I'll keep you posted.
